ChatGPT (from OpenAI) and Claude (from Anthropic) are general-purpose AI assistants that write, explain, analyze and code from your instructions. On the facts available, the clearest differences are in packaging: ChatGPT bundles image generation and voice into its plans, while Claude does not generate images but offers a large context window and coding tools. Prices are similar at the entry level, so the choice depends on your tasks and your privacy preferences.

ChatGPT: plans, strengths and limits

According to IntuitionLabs' comparison of ChatGPT plans, which draws on OpenAI's pricing pages, OpenAI lists Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise options. Prices and plans change, so check OpenAI's own pricing page before you pay.

The Free plan gives unlimited everyday text chats with a model called GPT-5.6 Luna, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards. File uploads, image generation, voice, data analysis, deep research, memory, Codex (OpenAI's coding tool) and ChatGPT Work each have their own separate limits. In other words, free does not mean you get every feature without caps.

Plus costs approximately $20 per month. The same source says it targets individual power users and adds priority access, faster responses and expanded capabilities such as more messaging and image generation. Pro costs $200 per month, is aimed at research and coding work, and offers substantially more usage than Plus, although limits and abuse guardrails still apply. The page notes that Pro's availability and included usage can vary by market and account.

For organizations, Business (formerly called Teams) charges $20 per user per month for a Standard seat when billed annually, or $25 when billed monthly. Premium seats cost $100 per user per month annually or $125 monthly and include higher usage limits. Enterprise has custom pricing and adds enterprise-grade security, support and service-level agreements.

Strengths: a broad set of features in one place (text, images, voice, data analysis, research) and a ladder of plans from free to $200. Limits: many features are metered separately, so the headline price tells you less than the usage rules do, and the top plan is expensive.

Claude: plans, strengths and limits

The details below come from IntuitionLabs' guide to Claude plans and pricing, which says it was checked against Anthropic's documentation. Again, confirm current prices with Anthropic.

The Free plan works on web, iOS, Android and desktop. It can write and edit text, generate code, analyze text or images, run web searches and use desktop extensions. According to that page, free accounts include memory and a 200K-token context window (the amount of text the model can keep in view at once), but not Claude Code, Anthropic's coding environment. Free users face strict usage limits; the page cites a Tom's Guide review saying heavy users reach them fairly quickly.

Pro costs $20 per month, or $17 per month when billed annually. It offers roughly five times the usage of the free plan, plus Claude Code access, unlimited projects, a research mode, connections to Google Workspace and tools such as Claude in Excel and Claude in Chrome. Max is for very heavy use and comes in two tiers: $100 per month (5 times Pro usage) and $200 per month (20 times Pro usage). Team and Enterprise plans exist for organizations; Enterprise pricing is custom. The page gives somewhat inconsistent figures for Team seats, so check Anthropic's pricing page for those.

One limit matters for many readers: the same source says Claude has no built-in image or video generation, as its models focus on text, code and analysis of images you provide. Strengths: a generous free feature set, a 200K-token context window even on the free plan, and coding tools included from Pro upward. Limits: no image creation, and strict free-tier caps.

Features compared: writing, coding, files, images and voice

Writing and editing

Claude's free plan lists writing, editing and summarizing among its capabilities, and ChatGPT is likewise built for text generation. The sources I used do not rank their writing quality, so I will not claim one writes better. Writing style is personal. Give both a paragraph of your own text, ask each to continue it, and keep the one that needs fewer edits.

Coding

Both companies sell dedicated coding tools: Codex on the ChatGPT side (with its own limits on the Free plan) and Claude Code on Anthropic's side, which is not on the Free plan but is included from Pro. If programming is your main use, test both on a real bug from your own project and judge by how many corrections each needs.

Files and long documents

ChatGPT's Free plan allows uploads with separate limits. Claude's free plan advertises a 200K-token context window. A large window is useful, but it does not guarantee the model notices every detail buried in a long text. Test it: upload a long document and ask five questions whose answers sit in different places.

Images

This is the clearest difference. ChatGPT includes image generation, with limits on Free and expanded access on Plus. Claude can analyze images you upload but does not generate images or video. If you need pictures created from a description, ChatGPT is the option of the two.

Voice

ChatGPT's Free plan lists voice among features with separate limits. The Claude pages I used do not describe a voice mode, so I cannot compare them. Check Claude's current apps if voice matters to you.

Privacy and your data

Assume that what you type is processed on the provider's servers. Both providers let personal users influence whether chats help train models, but the defaults are described differently.

For ChatGPT, IntuitionLabs reports that users of Free, Plus and Pro must opt out to keep their chats from improving OpenAI's models, while Business and Enterprise do not use workspace data for training by default.

For Claude, Anthropic's announcement on consumer terms and privacy says Free, Pro and Max users choose whether their data may be used to improve Claude, with the setting changeable at any time in Privacy Settings. If you allow it, data is retained for five years; if not, the existing 30-day retention period continues. Anthropic adds that deleting a conversation means it will not be used for future model training. These terms do not apply to services under its commercial terms: Team and Enterprise plans, the API, Claude Gov and Claude for Education.

A short checklist:

  1. Find the training setting in your account and set it deliberately.
  2. Check how to delete conversations.
  3. Review the memory feature, which both free plans include according to the sources.
  4. Never paste passwords, medical records or confidential client material into a personal account. If your work needs this, ask your employer for a business plan and read its terms.

Limits and risks you share with both

Both assistants hallucinate: they sometimes produce fluent statements that are false, including invented quotes, sources and numbers. Neither replaces a doctor, lawyer or accountant. Ask for sources and open them, especially for medical, legal or recent information.

Both can also be too agreeable, praising a weak plan or accepting a wrong premise. Asking the assistant to argue against your idea is a good habit. Both meter usage, so a long session can hit a cap even on a paid plan, and the most expensive tiers ($200 per month on either side) only make sense for heavy professional use. Finally, watch for dependence: if you hand over every first draft, your own skills can fade.

Verdict by use case, and how to choose

These are my recommendations, based only on the facts above and not on my own testing.

  • For image creation: ChatGPT, since Claude does not generate images.
  • For writing and editing: no clear winner from the sources. Test both with your own text.
  • For programming: both have dedicated tools. Claude Code arrives with Pro, while Codex is available with limits even on the free ChatGPT plan, so try both on a real bug.
  • For long documents on a free account: Claude's stated 200K-token window makes it a natural first test, but verify with questions you know the answers to.
  • On a budget: use both free plans and pay for at most one, the one you open more often. Entry paid plans are priced almost identically.
  • For heavy individual use: compare ChatGPT Pro at $200 with Claude Max at $100 or $200 by the usage you actually need.
  • For privacy-sensitive work: neither personal account suits confidential material. Business or Team-type plans have different data terms, so read them.

I do not name an overall winner: the facts do not support one. To choose, list your three most frequent tasks, run them on both free plans with real material, score accuracy, tone, speed and how much you had to fix, and only then check current prices before upgrading.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude better than ChatGPT?

Neither is better at everything. ChatGPT includes image generation and voice, while Claude does not generate images but offers a 200K-token window on its free plan. For writing and coding the sources do not name a winner, so test both.

Can I use both?

Yes. Both have free plans, so you can compare answers on important questions at no cost, which also helps you spot hallucinations. Paying for both only makes sense if your work depends on their different strengths.

Are my conversations used to train the models?

It depends on the plan and your settings. According to the sources, ChatGPT Free, Plus and Pro users must opt out, while Claude Free, Pro and Max users choose whether to allow it. Business and commercial plans on both sides follow different terms.

Which one is cheaper?

At entry level they are almost the same: about $20 per month for ChatGPT Plus and $20 per month for Claude Pro ($17 if billed annually). At the top, ChatGPT Pro is $200, while Claude Max starts at $100. Prices change, so check each provider's pricing page.
